Mini Huayhuash trek

My wife and I just finished a private 5 day Huayhuash trek with Joel. He was a great guide, friendly to deal with, and professional. The quantities of food and snacks were more than enough. We'd definitely recommend Joel for anyone who'd want to trek in the Huayhuash range.

Huayhuash Trek

We just completed a 5-night mini trek in the Huayhuash range with Joel. He was friendly to deal with, organized, professional, and doubled up as a good cook. The trek itself was definitely tough with the altitude and we totally appreciated all the support from Joel.

Joel helps you go further than you thought possible

Outstanding adventure with Joel and his team. He helped us achieve the circuit with humour and patience. It was only after we got home we realized how much he had done to make our trek enjoyable, safe and at the same time spectacular. Many thanks.

Super compagnie, nourriture incroyable !!!

What You'll See in the Cordillera Huayhuash

Every circuit shows you a different slice of the range — the tags on each highlight tell you which Cordillera Huayhuash trekking routes include it.

  • Laguna Jahuacocha Peru, turquoise lake below the Yerupajá and Jirishanca peaks in the Cordillera Huayhuash

    Laguna Jahuacocha

The postcard of the Huayhuash circuit in Peru: a turquoise lake sitting directly under the walls of Yerupajá and Jirishanca. Camping on its shore, with alpenglow on the glaciers at sunset, is the single most requested night of the whole range.

  • Laguna Carhuacocha Peru seen from the Tres Lagunas viewpoint on the climb to Siula Pass

    Three Lakes Viewpoint (Tres Lagunas)

Three glacial lakes stacked beneath a wall of 6,000-metre summits — the most famous photograph in the Peruvian Andes. You'll earn it on the climb from Carhuacocha to Siula Pass, and you'll never take a better trekking picture.

  • Siulá Grande west face and glacier from San Antonio Pass, Touching the Void mountain, Huayhuash trek Peru

Siulá Grande — the "Touching the Void" mountain

From San Antonio Pass you look straight into the west face of Siulá Grande (6,344 m), where Joe Simpson's story of survival became mountaineering legend. There is no closer view of Siulá Grande in the Peruvian Andes, and standing here you understand why.

  • Nevado Yerupajá Peru, 6,617 m, seen from the Huayhuash Circuit trail

Yerupajá, the second-highest peak in Peru

At 6,617 m, the Yerupajá mountain Peru calls "El Carnicero" — the Butcher, for its knife-edge ridges — rules the skyline of every single day on the trail. It has been summited fewer times than Everest.

  • Viconga hot springs Peru, natural thermal pools at a Huayhuash Circuit camp

    Viconga Hot Springs

Deep in the range, after crossing a high pass, the trail delivers you to the Viconga Huayhuash thermal pools at 4,400 m. Hot water, cold air, glacier views: the best-earned bath of your life.

  • Laguna Solteracocha glacial lake and Rasac icefall near Jahuacocha, Cordillera Huayhuash

    Solteracocha & the Rasac Amphitheater

A quiet side valley above Jahuacocha where icefalls calve off Rasac and Yerupajá almost within earshot. Few trekkers make it here — which is exactly the point.

The People Behind Your Trek

Cordillera Huayhuash trek guides and camp crew below the snow peaks of the range

Licensed local Huayhuash trek guides from Huaraz

Every departure is led by an official, licensed trekking guide — local people who work these trails season after season and know every pass, shortcut and weather sign in the range. Your cook and muleteers are local too: this is their backyard, and it shows.

  • Licensed trekking guide
  • Camp cook

S/. 280

of every booking goes to local communities

Community-supported trekking

Your community entry fees go directly to the 8 campesino communities whose land you'll cross — Llámac, Pocpa, Queropalca, Quishuarcancha, Túpac Amaru, Uramaza, Huayllapa and Pacllón. These fees are their main income from tourism: they maintain the trails, the campsites and the night patrols that keep the circuit safe. And because our muleteers and cooks are hired in these same villages, your trek pays wages where it walks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best guided trek packages for Huayhuash trekking?

Huayhuash Circuit offers three guided packages, all with licensed local guides, full meals, mules and community entry fees included: the 4-day Huayhuash Mini Trek, built around Laguna Jahuacocha; the 8-day Huayhuash Trek — our most popular, covering the full circuit including the Three Lakes viewpoint and Siulá Grande; and the 10-day Huayhuash Full Trek, the complete circuit at a gentler pace with more time to acclimatize. Every package can be booked online with a deposit and paid in up to 3 installments — current prices and departure dates are on each tour page.

Huayhuash trek: 8 days vs 10 days — what's the difference?

Both treks walk the same full Huayhuash Circuit loop — the difference is the line they take and the pace. The 8-day trek takes the alpine route over Trapecio Pass (5,000 m) and San Antonio Pass (5,020 m), with longer days of 6–8 hours and the closest views of Siulá Grande; it skips Laguna Viconga entirely. The 10-day trek follows the classic line through Portachuelo Pass and Laguna Viconga — where you soak in natural hot springs mid-trek — with shorter 5–6 hour days and gentler acclimatization. Choose 8 days if you're fit, acclimatized and short on time; choose 10 if it's your first high-altitude trek or you'd rather earn the same loop at a kinder pace. Either way, you cross the entire range.

What's the best time of year for a Huayhuash circuit trek?

The best time to trek the Huayhuash Circuit is May through September, the Andean dry season, when days are mostly sunny, trails are stable and mountain views are clearest. Expect warm days (15–20 °C / 59–68 °F) and cold nights that can drop to -10 °C (14 °F) at the highest camps. June to August is peak season with the most reliable weather — book early. April and October are quieter shoulder months with a higher chance of rain, and the November–March wet season is not recommended: passes can be snowed in and trails turn to mud.

What are the symptoms of altitude sickness on a Huayhuash trek, and how do I prevent it?

Common symptoms of altitude sickness (AMS) are headache, nausea, loss of appetite, dizziness, unusual fatigue and poor sleep — usually appearing within the first days above 4,000 m. The most effective prevention is acclimatization: spend at least 2 days in Huaraz (3,050 m) before the trek doing easy day hikes, drink 3–4 liters of water daily, walk slowly the first days, eat light and avoid alcohol. On the trail, our guides serve coca tea each morning, monitor every trekker daily, and an emergency horse accompanies each group. If symptoms become severe, the only reliable treatment is descending — and our route always has an exit plan. If you have heart or lung conditions, consult your doctor before booking.

Do I need a permit to enter the Huayhuash Conservation Area?

There is no government permit system for the Huayhuash Circuit. Instead, each of the 8 campesino communities along the route — Llámac, Pocpa, Queropalca, Quishuarcancha, Túpac Amaru, Uramaza, Huayllapa and Pacllón — charges its own entrance fee, totaling around S/. 280 (about US$75) per trekker for the full circuit, payable only in cash at checkpoints on the trail. On all Huayhuash Circuit packages these community fees are already included in your price: we pay them for you and keep the receipts, so you don't need to carry fee money or stop to negotiate. Bring your passport — communities register trekkers' details at some checkpoints.

Where can I buy or rent thermal clothing for Huayhuash trekking?

In Huaraz, dozens of outdoor shops around Parque Ginebra and Avenida Luzuriaga rent quality gear by the day — down jackets, sleeping bags, mats and trekking poles — which is the cheapest option if you don't want to fly with bulky equipment. Buy (don't rent) anything that must fit your body well: broken-in hiking boots, base layers and socks, ideally at home before your trip. Lima also has international outdoor stores if you need something on arrival. Check your package details before renting a sleeping bag — several Huayhuash Circuit packages include one rated for -10 °C.

What kind of water purification system is best for the Huayhuash trek?

All water on the Huayhuash Circuit must be treated before drinking — every valley has grazing cattle and sheep, so no stream or lake is safe untreated. On our treks the cooks boil all water used for meals and hot drinks, and you can refill your bottles with boiled water at camp each morning and evening. For water you collect during the day's hike, the best systems are a squeeze or bottle filter (Sawyer Squeeze, Katadyn BeFree) for convenience, purification tablets as a lightweight backup, or a UV purifier if you prefer. Whatever you choose, carry a backup method — at 4,500 m, a cracked filter with no plan B is a real problem.

Where can I find detailed topographical maps of the Huayhuash region?

Every Huayhuash Circuit package page includes a free downloadable route map of that itinerary, marking camps, passes, altitudes, lakes and highlights — made by us specifically for the circuit you'll hike. For full topographic detail, the reference sheet is the Alpenvereinskarte 0/3c "Cordillera Huayhuash" (Austrian Alpine Club map), and apps like Gaia GPS or AllTrails offer offline topo layers — download everything before leaving Huaraz, as there is no cell coverage on the circuit. On guided treks navigation is our job, so maps are for your curiosity, not your survival.

What's the best way to acclimatize before starting a Huayhuash trek?

Arrive in Huaraz (3,050 m) at least 2 full days before your trek and do one or two easy day hikes — it's the single most effective way to prevent altitude sickness on the circuit. We offer optional 1-day acclimatization hikes from Huaraz, bookable as an add-on to your trek and chosen to match your dates and fitness level. Sleep in Huaraz, hike high during the day, drink plenty of water and take it easy on alcohol. Not sure which warm-up hikes fit your itinerary? Ask us on WhatsApp — the advice is always free: +51 926 445 634

Which airlines fly to the Huayhuash trekking region?

There are currently no reliable commercial flights to Huaraz — service to its small Anta airport (ATA) is sporadic and seasonal at best. The practical route is to fly into Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM), served from the US by LATAM, American, United, Delta, JetBlue and Avianca among others, then take a comfortable overnight bus to Huaraz (8–10 hours). Cruz del Sur, Oltursa and Móvil Tours run reliable "bus cama" services with fully reclining seats — book ahead for June–August. Leave at night, wake up in the mountains.
